Today began with another trip to Radio Times. This live broadcast was very interesting and also another very controversial issue. It was vaccines and how and why some people do not vaccinate their kids because of religious beliefs. We had many people call in with both perspectives, and the guest, an expert in this field, very eloquently explained why he believes vaccinations should be required, due to the various children that have died because of parental neglect. around one thirty I went up to Craig's office to conduct the mentor interview. It was very interesting and I will edit it a little tomorrow. After the interview I worked more on my video and after speaking with both Craig and Steve, decided that my video is pretty much finished. Tomorrow will be a very slow day because I will have very little to do.

The first half of today was dedicated to a trip into the city to film and interview a local spanish radio. One of the other interns, Miguel, has helped me with many pieces of my project so when he asked if I wanted to go with him to help out, I of course obliged. This radio station is run completely in spanish and three of the four interviews were done in spanish. This was a little challenging because though Miguel is from the Dominican Republic and can speak spanish fluently, Lisa and I could not understand what they were saying at all. Because of this, I was put on camera duty and wandered around the place getting b roll. I also manned the camera and checked the sound quality as Miguel was interviewing them. After I came back from the radio station I had lunch and then went right back to work editing my video. I am very far along with this and expect to be done imminently. I have come a long way in this project and am so grateful to everyone who has helped me at WHYY.
Like yesterday, I began today by heading over to the Radio Times studio and sitting in on the first hour of their live broadcast. This broadcast was on volunteer firemen and their experiences. Two volunteer firemen came in to speak with Marty Moss-coane live, and two other volunteer firemen came in to watch the show. The producer was very busy today, but this time all of the comments and questions were very interesting and added a lot to the live conversation. After the show I went over my video with Craig Santoro and Steve Dixon and edited for a while with them. The afternoon was very slow because I was waiting to get b roll from Lisa's after school class. Two of the three groups went outside today to get some man-on-the-street interviews and I followed one of them around to get some more interesting b roll. After getting this footage, I am almost finished with my promotional video. Now I am just hoping for a small project from Esme so the rest of the week will be eventful and productive. I am excited about the product I have now, and I am proud that the finished product will be put on WHYY's website and possibly even broadcasted on television. It feels good to have done something important for such a prominent media provider.
I started off today by going and meeting with Emily, the producer at Radio Times. She took me into the studio and I watched them do a live broadcast of Radio Times. The first hour was on the controversy surrounding the issue of gun control. Sunday there was a group of about eighty or so people that met up and had an open carry rally in a public park in Philadelphia. Many people were up in arms about this, and two experts, one from each side of the issue, were brought in to talk about it. This was an exciting broadcast, not only because the two guests were getting somewhat heated about the issue (and on live air, too), but also because since I was in the production half of the studio I was also witnessing the producer take all of the calls, emails, and social media posts. the producer's job was to sort and filter all of the outside questions and comments into ones that can go on air, ones that are given straight to Marty Moss-coane to say, and ones that are not quite formulated enough for a live broadcast. An hour later, this fiasco was over and I returned to the classroom to continue editing my video on after school programs. The rest of the day continued as it has been for the past two weeks.
My week was not really busy until the last day of work, when I had several different things happen. During the week I worked exclusively on editing the content, except for my two interviews with Andre and Craig. I think at this point I am almost done with my overall project. I may need to collect one or two more statements from students to fill in the holes in my content. The last step will be to finish collecting pictures and b roll to add diversity and interest to the overall video. My goals for next week are of course, finish my video, but also to receive and complete some sort of minor project from Esme in public relations. This would give me more experience in a similar field to the one I was working in already, but also give me a project to look back on when I am considering what to study in college and what to do when I am thinking of jobs. Public relations is something I think I am very interested in and fascinated by, so I might as well get some experience now when I have the chance. I am feeling good where I am in my project because when I finish, I will have ended up contributing at least one promotional tool to WHYY and the Public Media Commons. If I do a project for Esme as well I would be contributing that to them as well, whether they use it or not. I took a lot from this week. I learned how to loop audio and I got my first taste of an interview with my mentor. I also learned a lot about public relations, which may even end up being my job later on. On top of it all, I ended up meeting with Radio Times and setting up a time when I will sit in on a live broadcast with them. This week was eventful and taught me a lot about several different branches in media making and I will do my best to uphold these connections just in case I need them later on.
I spent much of today rearranging my video and learning about different audio options. From about twelve to two o'clock, I was online looking at royalty free music for my project. There was a lot to sift through so it was very difficult to find the right sound and mood for the video. My days have sort of started to blend together because I am now spending the majority of my time working on the computer with the after school video. All of my important interview are done, so the next step is to get my video closer to being final so we can interview students to fill in some of the holes. The difficult part of this is that I have an idea of what would sound good to ease the rough transitions, but we are not allowed to really tell the students what to say. The students have their own individual answers, which often will not work as well in the transitions as we hoped. I keep saying to Steve that I could just interview him, and then he could say whatever he wants, but he seems to be adamant about not showing up in this video. Despite the minor setbacks such as this, at this point the process is moving pretty smoothly. Though I did have doubts about what sort of project I would be presenting, I now believe that I will come through this with a refined and finalized promotional video for WHYY.
Today I got to work a little early and Steve went over my project with me. I had formatted the video more like a news video, so he talked to me about alternative ways to do it. With the new way, I still have categories but I will use less voice overs. I will instead organize the categories so they flow together better, and I will separate them with b roll. Around 11:00, I went up to Craig's office to interview him. We interviewed him for about 20 minutes and got a lot of good footage about the history of the program and what he is seeing and hoping for in the students. After his interview was done, I uploaded it up to my computer and put it in my final cut library. We then took a lunch break and Steve and Miguel ended up driving me around the city so I can see all of the Philly sights before I leave. I have attached them in a slideshow below. Today I worked more on editing my promotional video, and got it down to around 7 minutes. The video so far is made up of interview answers, time set aside for the voice-overs, and some of the b roll from the classes. I spent a lot of time taking the interviews and organizing them by question, instead of by the interviewee, like it was before. At around 12:30 or 1:00,
Todays post will be a mix of yesterdays daily blog post and my weekly update. This weekend I flew down to North Carolina with my family, which is why I missed Thursday and Friday of last week. My uncle has a job opportunity at the University of North Carolina, so while he and my aunt spent some time at meetings and looking at houses, I stayed with my cousin, looked around Chapel Hill, and walked around UNC's campus. The first week of my internship was busy, but this job turned out to be everything I hoped for. I feel very productive, but the atmosphere is such that I do not feel stressed or pressured to do my work. I finish my jobs and help other people because I want to, which turns out to be a much more productive way to run things in a business. I am much more open to different jobs when I feel like I am doing them to either complete something for myself, or help someone else. This is a big change from doing things at school because if I don't, I am threatened with a bad grade, or a future at McDonalds. I am now feeling comfortable here with all of the people that I have met and worked with, and I am having a lot of fun working with the students from the after school programs I am doing my documentary on. Being in the city is a little bit of a culture shock for me, because I am from a much smaller town. everything is much busier here, and I am somewhat overwhelmed by the amount of people here. Everything is faster here, from the trains that arrive right on time to walking down the street to even the students demeanor. Philadelphia is a beautiful city and I am so lucky to have placed an internship here. Monday was a low energy day, but I did end up getting a lot of work done. I ended up cutting the footage from my interviews by about 75%, from around 42 minutes to around 10.5 minutes. I still have a lot of work to do, because my video will be under five minutes long, and I still have to put in voice overs and some more diverse footage. Tuesdays work will be to organize the footage by the answers to my interview questions and to work on what I will say in my voice overs. When the students get here for the program at 4:00, I will hopefully be able to interview Sarah, one of the students. This week has been kind of a whirlwind, but I am very excited to stay here for the next couple of weeks! This is a picture of me interviewing the former student Sandy.
