Second Semester Honors Book Club

Reflection
Since I was a part of the first semester honors, I only had to do a project on one of the books. The book I chose was Half the Sky because I felt most inspired by this book. I was fascinated by all of the stories in the book about women’s struggles. For this project, I decided to write a song about what I felt about the struggle. In the song I wrote, I also decided to include a complete turn around. Instead of the entire song being simply about bearing the weight, I wrote about how women will stand up to fight and embrace the change.
I gained the most from Half the Sky because it opened my eyes to what is really going on in the world. I was aware of the fact that women’s rights is a problem, but to actually here first hand stories was really impactful. I was struck the most by the stories where the women were rescued by various organizations, only to return soon after. This was often because either they were ostracized and no longer felt like they belonged, or they were addicted to the drugs provided by the brothels. It was really difficult for me to read about the women who were unable to escape a horrible fate, even when they had the opportunities. Stories like these are setbacks from the overall efforts, but change is happening.
Perseverance seems to be my go-to Habit of Heart and Mind, but it really applies in this situation. This entire semester was a little rough, and though I am satisfied with the result, I was procrastinating on this project, I finished this project only a couple days before it was due, and had several obstacles to work through in order to turn this project in. I was struggling mainly with a lack of inspiration, and having a break from school really helped me through that. Spending a week with my friends playing and recording music was very healing for me, and I used that time wisely to finish up my honors humanities project. Academically, I have stayed pretty stable over the course of this semester, but had I not gotten out of my apathetic state through the course of this project, I may not have ended with a satisfactory grade. Though I enjoy reading and I had a lot of fun throughout Cat’s Cradle and Half the Sky, I suffered most from a lack of inspiration and motivation to finish out the semester well. Despite this, my final project for honors humanities was satisfactory and put me in an overall better place.
