Energy and Place Project
Project Reflection
The energy and place project was essentially about finding your sense of place and somehow conveying it to the audience in connection to your environmental ethic. My sense of place was a mental state instead of a physical place, and I reach it through playing music, climbing, and running. My environmental ethic was a mix between presevationism and conservationism and I put it in terms of my environmental ethic by saying we should preserve the world so our future generations are capable of finding their passions and preserving their humanity. This project was connected to our chemistry project because we were learning about different types of energy in each class. I learned abut the different types of environmental ethics until I made the decision about which one fit best with my morals.
At first it was very hard for me to figure out where my sense of place was because I don’t feel any strong connections to any physical place. When I realized that it did not have to be a physical place, my search became much easier. I realized I will always have a little piece of home to take with me when I travel, as long as I can freely practice my passions, which at this moment are music, climbing, and running. This project came relatively easily to me because I did not find it too difficult to put this feeling into words. I love writing poetry so the essay came fairly easily to me. The poem/essay doubled as my art piece, and was also used as my take action project.
Because my essay doubled as a visual piece in the form of poetry, I obviously can’t choose between the two which one I am most proud of. I feel like this poem came from a really authentic place, and I think I conveyed both my sense of place and my environmental ethic. My authenticity is very clear in the line where I talk about replacing my passions with substitutes because I am so overwhelmed by life. I listen to music instead of playing it, I do a quick workout instead of climbing, I skip a meal instead of going on a run. It is oddly freeing to have such an authentic and personal poem presented to the world. Through presenting this poem to the public I will be also getting my ideas out to the world, which will hopefully help them look at preserving the world through a different lens.
